Emergency Pads for Women in Haiti

Add Comment

We tend to take a lot of things for granted in the United States. Yes, we all have our problems; but most of us do have clean running water, shelter, clothing, and food. Most of us women have access to sanitary napkins and tampons, too. In Haiti, however, there is a different story.

Women in Haiti are experiencing a severe shortage of feminine hygiene products since the earthquake—especially during the postpartum period, when they are often needed just as much as they are during the menstrual cycle. Women’s periods don’t exactly make the news, but we call all appreciate what it’s like to be caught off guard without protection—though most of us have been able to remedy the situation quickly after it occurs. The Mind-Body Connection: Part II

But I know it’s one of those things where if I knew what I was missing, I would be devastated. And I know enough to know that I’m missing out on so much in life. I’ve never tried throwing paintballs, for example. I haven’t played a sport since I was 16—and even then, it was only for a year. I’ve never tried a martial art, I enjoy dancing on occasion but have never really learned how to do it well, and I would much rather lie around with a book than take a walk. The other kids would bring bikes, fishing poles, and other playtime equipment; I brought stacks of books, or notebooks and pens, or drawing materials. I’m not saying that there is nothing wrong with these activities; on the contrary, they are so very worthwhile and awesome that I’d like to share them with everyone in the world.

Life is short- why befriend people you don’t like? I’m not saying that these people have to declare me their sworn enemy because it wouldn’t be worth the effort. Some people click and some people don’t.

Add Comment

Chimpanzee LoveChimpanzee LoveIs monogamy the natural way for couples to live? I truthfully don’t know, but Psychologist Christopher Ryan doesn’t think so. He claims that in the past days of the hunter-gatherer, everything was shared because of the close proximity in which people lived. When the idea of personal property came into being, the idea of monogamy gained importance along with the eventual biblical ideas of not coveting another’s wife.  Christopher Ryan believes that agriculture and personal property also led to the belief that women were more likely to seen as property than as individuals contributing to society.
