Women and Sexual Orientation: It's A Lot More Fluid Than Many Think

Add Comment

Lisa Diamond, an associate professor of psychology and gender studies at the University of Utah, in January of 2008 published the results of a multi-year study of 79 women who did not self-identify as heterosexual. Professor Diamond's research began in 1995 when she conducted in-person interviews with the women, who identified themselves as lesbian, bisexual, or unlabeled but not heterosexual. The women were all between 18 and 25 years old at the time. Diamond then followed up with each woman every two years, in a phone interview. Dr. Diamond was researching the idea of bisexuality as a temporary stage of denial or transition, a stable "3rd type" of sexual orientation, or a heightened capacity for sexual fluidity.

Bad Waiters: to Tip or Not to Tip?

Add Comment

We have all been there. A restaurant outing with friends and family is made disastrous by bad service. I am talking about cold food, snotty servers, waiting what seems like years for a refill... you can set the scene I am sure. What is the right thing to do in this situation? What is the proper etiquette? Is it okay to just stiff that guy slinging out your food and drinks who is obviously having a bad day? Well...

Startling Study Finds Some Hook Ups Lead to Relationships- Are You Surprised?

Hook Ups Can Lead to Relationships- If You're LuckyHook Ups Can Lead to Relationships- If You're LuckyA recent study from the University of Iowa regarding hook ups and the longevity of relationships led me to the conclusion that perhaps the researchers at the University of Iowa have too much time on their hands. The researchers surveyed 642 heterosexual adults from the greater Chicago area about their sexual histories and the quality of their relationships.

The results of the study were pretty ambivalent- the researchers concluded that relationships that started off more slowly in the sexual department had a slightly higher likelihood of success than others. However, the researchers also concluded that hook ups can also lead to satisfying relationships. The determining factor is often whether or not those who participated in hook ups had the expectations of a relationship or not. If the person was open to a relationship, but not expecting one, the likelihood of a successful relationship was increased, but probably not exponentially.

Beginning Pilates Mat Workout

PilatesPilatesAfter years of a serious fear of Pilates, which I believe has the scientific name of Pilatesagoria, I finally succuumbed to the temptation to try out the exercises. Before attempting my first Pilates workout, I read a little about the benefits of Pilates. According to this website hyping Pilates, Pilates was developed to increase flexibility at the core of the body which can in turn benefit the core of the body or the back or the spine.

Because I am a newbie to Pilates, I opted to try out the Beginning Pilates Mat Workout dvd instead of joining an organized class in order to save myself money and embarrassment.

Space Animals - Real and Ficticious

I was reading this lovely story on the Newsweek website about animals that have been in space (Animals in Orbit) and it got me thinking about all of the furry little friends that have blasted off into the great unknown - including, of course, Sigourney Weaver. I don't mean to say that she is some sort of freakish, big toothed animal, but... she is a freakish big toothed animal (for the film Alien at least... oh she wasn't the alien? Whatever, I stand by it).

Gordman’s Ad Renders Goth Girls Gruesome

During the fifth grade, I went through what my family calls a “little goth phase.” I wore lots of black makeup, pewter jewelry of things like skulls and bats, and even took to wearing a Morticia Adams dress my mother had made herself for Halloween as a teen. (Yes, it was completely awesome.) Back then, it was pretty early for me to go through such a “phase” (and I put it in quotation marks because I still like to wear such jewelry and black nail polish—and would continue do the rest, probably, if I had the time and energy just because I like it), and I don’t remember anyone else dressing in such a way until junior high and high school. By then, I was in a more “earthy” phase (which I suppose I’m also still “into,” though today’s choices usually stem from whatever is sustainable, cheap, and used) and digging into my mom’s old bell-bottoms (which, unfortunately, did not fit—though they did inspire!).

Amy Winehouse & Pee...Wee

Well, this is an oldy - but a goody... well grossy...

Im a huge fan of Amy Winehouse. In fact I aspire to be like her someday. honestly, who wouldn't want to be under the infuence, semi-conscious, out of control, and rich? I guess I do not want to be exactly like her though - I mean she does do and say some pretty bizarro things, but I like to think of them as British and "charming"... sometimes.

Hot Baby Talk?

Add Comment

Okay, we have all done it at one point or another. The cooing, slobbering, baby talk with the ones we love. No, I'm not talking about JUST when we were babies but also the times it is done in a romantic way. Oh you haven't personally talked like a baby with anyone? Whatever.. you probably just don't remember because along with the photos, and all the clothes left in your closet, the memories were burned in a fit of rage.
