Is there a reason why Morgan Freeman is the eternal choice for voice overs? Yes, actually there is. According to the results of a recent study conducted by a researcher at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, women dig men with deep voices.
When shown images accompanied by voices of different timbres, the women in the study demonstrated a strong preference for the deeper voices. In addition, the women in the study were able to recollect the images that were shown with a deep male voice in the background more often than the women who took part in the study were able to recollect the images that were shown with a high-pitched male voice in the background. In the study, the women were asked to respond to both computer-generated male voices and actual male voices.
The researchers in the study speculated that women might prefer stronger male voices as a sign of masculinity; the same researchers want to further study different factors which determine women’s attractions to males. Specifically, they would like to study how location plays a role in women’s attractions to males and how women are attracted to males at different points in their menstrual cycles.
Before you get too excited about the results of this particular study which was published in the Journal of Memory & Cognition, it should be noted that the study was fairly limited in scope. There were only forty-five women who participated in the study, so the results might not be all that indicative of the population at large.
That said, most women I know tend to prefer men with deeper voices, which is probably the bane of existence for all of the young teenaged boys whose voices seem to be stuck in a permanent Peter Brady mode. If this proves to be true, guys with deep voices who are less attractive in person might want to woo women over the phone first instead of in person. It could make all of the difference in the world as the results of the study suggest that not only do women prefer deeper voices, they tend to remember the deeper voices much better than the high-pitched voices.
What do you think? How have your experiences with different voices affected your dating and mate selection choices? Do you find yourself gravitating towards the deepest voices in a room or are you deaf to the different kinds of voices?
