When I was a Jr. High student, I was not a stellar athlete by any means. The only sports I wanted to play in PE were football and soccer. I was allowed to play soccer and did ok, but the then-coach of the Jr. High Football team (a huge responsibility in the town I grew up in), wouldn't allow me to play football. He wasn't barring me from playing football with the guys on the team, but from PE class, which was based on absolutely nothing but my gender.
Although this was quite a while ago, and women have made strides in sports, it is still not enough. I was surprised to learn about a female referee for college football games, which seems to be a first. According to this video, they are also talking her up for a possible job a a sideline official in the NFL. OK, that's not arguably a job everybody would want, but I think it's amazing to have a woman involved in a sport that is traditionally male-dominated.
Personally, I would love to see the look on my old PE coach's face after watching this video. Women have come a long way in sports and I think we have a lot further to go. So, when we're cheering for our favorite teams and athletes, let's give some credit to the women athletes (and referees) who kick ass! Take a look at the video below to see a woman who is crossing a new frontier.
